Reducing or removing a large rock in yard.?

I have a large rock in the front yard of my new home that revealed itself after this years heavy snow and rain erosion. It was gr when I bought the place. I think it is granite. I would like to remove it or reduce it enough where I can cover will soil and gr again. My question is do I need to rent heavy equipment, or can I get a hand tool to chip it down to size. It's on a hill, so a jack hammer would not be desirable.
